Dive-by-Dive Scoring
ATLANTA – Purdue alumnus David Boudia rallied to win on 3-meter, leading the way as the Boilermakers posted four top-10 finishes Thursday at the USA Diving Winter Trials.
Boudia overcame a 26-point deficit entering the fifth round of the final, winning the event thanks to big scores of 94.50 and 89.25 on his final two dives. He ended up winning on 3-meter by 21 points after Olympian Michael Hixon, who led for much of the day, missed his final dive.
Current Boilermakers Greg Duncan (7th) and Joe Cifelli (9th) also placed among the top 10 on 3-meter. They both improved on their prelim scores in the final. Emily Bretscher finished 10th on 1-meter in her first event of the Winter Trials. She competes again Friday on 3-meter.
PURDUE RESULTS THURSDAY AT USA DIVING WINTER TRIALS
David Boudia, 907.95 (457.85 Final, 450.10 Prelim); Event Winner on 3-meter
Greg Duncan, 752.05 (378.20 Final, 373.85 Prelim); Finished 7th on 3-meter
Joe Cifelli, 739.50 (386.20 Final, 353.30 Prelim); Finished 9th on 3-meter
Emily Bretscher, 433.75 (199.55 Final, 234.20 Prelim); Finished 10th on 1-meter
Scores carry over from the prelims to finals this week in Atlanta. Boudia entered the 3-meter final in third place, 10.35 points behind Hixon. Boudia's fifth-round dive, a reserve 3 ½ somersault, earned him a score of 94.50 in both the prelim and final. That was the key dive of Boudia's list. But it was his final dive, a reverse 1 ½ somersault 3 ½ twist, that produced the score of 89.25 in the final and clinched the victory. A 10-point increase on that dive from the prelim to the final was a big reason why his list score improved by 7.75 points.
A four-time Olympic medalist in 10-meter events and 20-time USA Diving national champion, Boudia had not competed at a national meet since the 2016 Olympic Trials. Thursday also marked the first time he competed individually on 3-meter at a national meet since the 2013 USA Diving Winter Nationals. While winning six NCAA titles for Purdue from 2009 to 2011, he was victorious on 3-meter all three years. Boudia competed for the first time since the 2016 Olympics at last month's FINA Grand Prix meet in Australia, winning silver on 3-meter.
If he opts to pursue the opportunities, Boudia's showing Thursday also earned him USA Diving's berth at the 2019 FINA Grand Prix meets.
The USA Diving Winter Trials conclude Friday with the men's 10-meter and women's 3-meter. Ben Bramley, Brandon Loschiavo and Bretscher are slated to compete for the Boilermakers. Prelims are at 10 a.m. and finals at 4 p.m.
