PRINCETON, N.J. – Purdue wrestlers Ben Thornton and Dylan Lydy captured individual titles at the season opening Princeton Open on Sunday. Thornton won four of his five bouts at 133 pounds with bonus points, including an 11-1 major decision in the championship match against Army's Lane Peters. Lydy, ranked 10th nationally at 174 pounds, defeated Chase Gallik of Lehigh 9-4 in the title match.
Six additional Boilermakers that placed in the second annual tournament that was held at Jadwin Gymnasium. No. 14 Nate Limmex was the 141-pound runner-up, finishing the day at 4-1. Three Purdue wrestlers, 16th-ranked Devin Schroder (125), Cole Wysocki (165) and No. 12 Christian Brunner (197), placed third at their respective weight classes.
Due to NCAA rules permitting wrestlers to six matches in a day, 184-pounder Max Lyon finished tied for fifth, as his opponent Billy Janzer of Rutgers had also reached the six-match maximum. Redshirt freshman Parker Filius went 3-2 on his way to a sixth-place showing at 149 pounds.
The Boilermakers will travel out east again in five days to compete in the Journeymen Northeast Duals on Saturday and the Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Sunday. Both events will take place at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York.
