IOWA CITY, Iowa – A trio of Purdue wrestlers were victorious in a 26-9 loss to No. 3 Iowa on Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Jacob Aven, Devin Schroder and Dylan Lydy picked up wins for the 14th-ranked Boilermakers (2-1, 0-1 B1G) as they suffered their first dual loss of the season. The Hawkeyes moved to 4-0 overall in their first Big Ten Conference dual.
Purdue won back-to-back bouts to take a 6-3 edge after Iowa posted a decision in the dual's opening contest at 197 pounds. Aven was credited with the first win, a 3-1 decision in sudden victory at 285. Aven and his Hawkeye opponent, Aaron Costello, were knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation. Nearing the midway point of the 60-second sudden victory, Aven (5-6) made his move and scored the winning takedown.
A second-period takedown separated Schroder in a 4-2 decision of Iowa's Perez Perez in the ensuing battle at 125. The 15th-ranked Boilermaker recovered from an early Perez takedown by capitalizing on a neutral start in the second period. The redshirt sophomore improved to 8-1 with the win.
The next five weights went the Hawkeyes' way, adding bonus points with a fall at 157 and a major decision at 165.
Lydy took Myles Wilson down once in each of the three periods on his way to a 7-3 decision. Lydy, ranked 13th nationally at 174 pounds, did not surrender an offensive point to Wilson as the Boilermaker pushed his redshirt junior mark to 9-2.
It is a short workweek for the Boilermakers. They'll hit the road Wednesday and head to the desert for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational. The two-day tournament, the season's first national marquee event, opens from the Las Vegas Convention Center at noon ET on Friday.
