Scoring Breakdown / Complete Meet Results: Swimmers at IU / Divers at Texas
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A pair of freshman records and a podium finish by diver Emily Bretscher highlighted the fall invitational action for Purdue women's swimming & diving.
The Purdue swimmers raced at the IU Invitational and the divers competed at the Texas Hall of Fame Invitational. Both were three-day meets featuring numerous Power Five programs. Twenty-eight Purdue student-athletes scored in at least one individual event.
Bretscher opened the Boilermakers' week in Austin with a third-place finish on 3-meter. She was also among the eight finalists on 1-meter, accounting for 27 of the team's 49 points as Purdue finished third in the women's team scoring at the diving-only invitational.
Tessa Wrightson (100 back) and Jade Knueppel (50 free) established the freshman benchmarks in Bloomington. Wrightson moved into fifth place in program history while eclipsing teammate Jackie Smailis' freshman record from 2016. Knueppel bested Carly Marshall's mark that had stood since 2012.
Senior Taite Kitchel was the Boilermakers' top scorer at the IU Invitational, qualifying for the A final of both butterfly events. She also would have been a C finalist in the 400 IM but opted to scratch the event in the finals due to it being contested on the same day as the 100 fly. Friday, Kitchel posted a career-best time in the 400 IM (4:17.04) and came with a tenth of a second of Purdue's program record (52.85) in the 100 fly (52.95). The two-time NCAA Championships qualifier posted NCAA provisional qualifying times in three events.
Maizie Seidl and Danielle Auckley joined Kitchel and Smailis as Boilermakers to score in three individual events. Auckley, Kitchel and Smailis also teamed with Jinq En Phee to help the 200 and 400 medley relay teams post a pair of top-five times in program history.
Purdue's next full meet is Jan. 11 at Michigan State. The divers are slated to compete at the USA Diving Winter Trials in Atlanta the week of Dec. 16 to 21. After flying to Hawaii last year and having scheduled a training trip to South Florida next year, the Boilermakers will be staying on campus for their winter training camp this season.
