WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For their longest and final meets of the fall semester, the Purdue swimmers are racing at the same pools that will host the Big Ten Championships in February.
The Boilermakers compete in a pair of six-session invitational meets this week. The Purdue men headed west to Iowa City for the Hawkeye Invitational. The Purdue women made the short trip south to Bloomington for the IU Invitational. Both meets feature morning prelims and evening finals on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
While their diving counterparts compete this week at Texas, which is hosting both the men's and women's NCAA Championships this season, the swimmers remained in Big Ten country.
Indiana's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center is slated to host the women's Big Ten Championships from Feb. 20 to 23. Iowa's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, which opened in summer of 2010 as the newest aquatic center in the conference, is hosting the men's Big Ten Championships the following week (Feb. 27-March 2). Both meets are one week later on the calendar than normal. That coupled with an early Thanksgiving – Nov. 22 is the earliest date Thanksgiving can fall on – means there will be additional time for training leading up to Big Tens this year.
Both invitational meets will feature the traditional order of events utilized at the Big Ten Championships.
Purdue moved up in the latest top-25 polls released Wednesday by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America. The women went from unranked to No. 17. They'll compete against three other top-25 teams this week in Bloomington. The men rose three spots to No. 22. No. 18 Minnesota is the other ranked team competing in Iowa City.
The nine Purdue swimmers that competed at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge this past weekend all donned racing suits for the first time this season. The suits helped produce season-best times for numerous swimmers at the inaugural ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The entire team will now have that same opportunity. And while the mid-season invitational meets traditionally produce the fastest times of the fall semester, the Boilermakers did not rest for as long as they do in February in preparation for the Big Ten Championships.
