WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.
– All-American swimmer and Purdue alumna Kaersten Meitz has been selected to compete for the United States at the 2019 World University Games, which is slated for July in Italy.

Meitz is part of USA Swimming's National Team for the second year in a row, originally earning a place among the elite group in part by her performance at the 2017 World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan. She helped the U.S. win silver in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay and was a finalist in both her individual events, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter free. That's the same event that earned her another berth at the upcoming Summer Universiade. Swimming events are set for July 4 to 10 in Naples, Italy.

Purdue divers Emily Meaney (Australia) and Joe Cifelli (USA) also competed at the 2017 World University Games, with Meaney winning silver in synchronized 10-meter.  Head coaches John Klinge and Dan Ross were also in attendance. Overall, Purdue had its largest representation ever at the World University Games in 2017. The men's basketball program won silver while competing as Team USA. Additionally, tennis players Gergely Madarasz and Krisztina Kapitany both competed for Hungary.

Meitz earned her bachelor's degree in selling and sales management in May and continues to train under Klinge's guidance at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. She plans to begin a master's program in 2019. College graduates remain eligible for the World University Games if they are currently enrolled in a master's program and no older than 23.

With Meitz set to be part of the U.S. team again, Purdue swimming & diving will be represented by a student-athlete at an eighth straight World University Games. The streak at the biennial event dates back to 2005. Meitz is set to join fellow All-American Giordan Pogioli from the men's program as the only two-time Summer Universiade participants during the streak.

The USA Diving Winter Trials, set for Dec. 15 to 21 in Atlanta, will serve as the diving qualifier for the World University Games.

Meitz finished her college career in March as a four-year individual qualifier for the NCAA Championships and Purdue's record holder in the 500-, 1,000- and 1650-yard freestyle. As a senior, she swam the anchor leg on the record-setting 400 medley relay and also helped the 800 free relay team qualify for NCAAs. She set multiple program records in the long course distance freestyle events as well. With a fifth-place finish in the 500 free at the 2018 NCAA Championships, she closed her career as a full-fledged All-American. She was also an honorable mention All-American in the event as a sophomore and junior.

This past summer, Meitz finished fourth in the A final of the 400-meter free at the USA Swimming Phillips 66 Nationals Championships in Southern California. She also placed 12th overall in the 800. She raced at USA Swimming's TYR Pro Swim Series events in Indianapolis and Columbus as well.
