Champaign, Ill. – The Purdue women's soccer team opened the penultimate weekend with a 3-1 loss to Illinois on Thursday. With the outcome, the Boilermakers fall to a 6-6-3 (1-5-2 B1G) record.
The loss marks the first time in Big Ten play a game has been decided by more than one goal and the first time the Boilermakers conceded more than two goals since Oct. 12, 2017.
Illinois forward Makena Silber posted the first goal by either team in the 15th minute before Katie Murray notched the second in the 23rd for a 2-0 Illini advantage at halftime.
Ena Sabanagic buried her third goal of the season to put the Boilermakers on the board in the 52nd minute. The junior received a pass from Sarah Clark at midfield, before dribbling the ball down the pitch and placing the ball in the top left corner of the net.
Not long after, Katie Luce produced multiple stops, coming off her line in one-on-one situations to effectively shut off the angle at the top of the box and deflect the shot.
Despite controlling the ball much of the second half, the Fighting Illini were able to notch the insurance goal in the 83rd minute on a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. It was the first shot for Illinois in over 15 minutes of action.
Purdue closed out the remaining time pressuring the defense and posting a trio of shots and a corner kick, however Illinois goalkeeper Jaelyn Cunningham and the back line produced the necessary stops. Included in the attempts was a strong opportunity by Hannah Mussallem from just beyond the box, but the ball landed a few inches left of the frame.
Purdue and Illinois finished the game knotted with seven shots on goal apiece. Sabangic led the Boilermakers with three on-frame, while Kylie Hase registered two.
Five Boilermakers went the distance: Clark, Hase, Luce, Hannah Mussallem and Julia Ware.
