WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue senior punter Joe Schopper was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the Boilermakers' 42-28 win at Nebraska on Sept. 29.
Schopper punted seven times against the Cornhuskers for an average of 41.3 yards. More impressive was that five of his boots came to rest inside the Nebraska 20-yard line, and the average starting field position for the Cornhuskers after Schopper punts was the 15-yard line.
For the season, Schopper is averaging 42 yard per punt, with nine of 22 attempts landing inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
Schopper is the first Purdue punter to be so honored by the Big Ten since Cody Webster on Sept. 10, 2012. The Boilermakers' last Special Teams Player of the Week was kicker J.D. Dellinger on Oct. 10, 2016.
The Boilermakers (2-3, 1-1 Big Ten) have been recognized by the conference four times in five weeks this season. Prior to Schopper, senior quarterback David Blough was the Offensive Player of the Week after the Missouri game Sept. 15, while wide receiver Rondale Moore was Freshman of the Week after the Northwestern game Aug. 30 and the Boston College game Sept. 22.
Purdue's four honorees are its most since 2012, when it had five.
