WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind – The opening weekend of Big Ten play concluded with the Purdue women's soccer team falling 1-0 to Michigan for the first shutout Purdue has conceded this year.
With its second loss of the season, Purdue's six-game unbeaten streak at Folk Field was snapped.
The lone goal of the game was recorded in the 65th minute by Releigh Loughman on a serve from Nicki Hernandez.
Despite Michigan earning the edge with a 13-12 shot advantage, the Boilermakers put seven more balls on-frame than the Wolverines. Additionally, Purdue forced Michigan goalkeeper Izzy Nino to make nine saves, while Marisa Bova made one.
Sarah Clark led the Boilermakers with three shots, all of which aimed on-goal.
The Boilermakers created a few solid opportunities in the first half. Kylie Hase ripped a shot off in the 37th minute for Nino to make the save before Skylurr Patrick recorded the rebound, only to be blocked by a Michigan defender.
Freshman Sydney Duarte created a few dangerous scoring opportunities, but could not convert. With less than ten minutes in the game, Duarte went down in the penalty box, but no call was made and play resumed.
Despite the added pressure Purdue created in the final minutes, the Boilermakers could not find the back of the net. Clark recorded two shots in the closing five minutes.
