Boilermakers Take Second in Crusader Open

The men's and women's cross country teams each placed second in the season opener at the Crusader Open. Junior Jenna Halderman recorded the top time for the women with a time of 17:27.2, good for third place, while senior Jake Hanawalt finished sixth overall after timing in at 18:32.5 to lead the Purdue men.

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The men's and women's cross country teams each placed second in the season opener at the Crusader Open. Junior Jenna Halderman recorded the top time for the women with a time of 17:27.2, good for third place, while senior Jacob Hanawalt finished sixth overall after timing in at 18:32.5 to lead the Purdue men.

This marked the second straight year Halderman led the Boilermakers at the Crusader Open. The Peru, Indiana native shaved 17 seconds off her 5,000-meter time from a year ago to solidify the personal-best. Fellow teammate Megan Slamkowski shaved off an impressive 34 seconds off her 2017 time to finish second on the Purdue team and 10th overall with her time of 17:51.4.

On the men's side, two Boilermakers competing in their first meet were next to follow Hanawalt. Kyle Griffith recorded 15th place in 18:38.3, while Tyler Bowling crossed the finish line in 18:39.6 for 25th place.
