WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After yet another close match, the Purdue men's tennis team can finally exhale. Saturday, the Boilermakers notched their first Big Ten win of the spring against No. 46 Wisconsin. Purdue's narrow 4-3 victory was also its first over a ranked program since defeating the No. 30-ranked Badgers in the final dual of the 2017 regular season.
Inside the Schwartz Tennis Center, the Boilermakers captured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Athell Bennett and Maksymilian Raupuk defeated No. 89 Osgar O'Hoisin and Daniel Soyfer 7-5 on the second, while Gergely Madarasz and Javier Rodriguez outplayed Chase Colton and Lamar Remy 7-6 (7-5) on the third.
In singles, Wisconsin traded points with Purdue through the first four matches, but could never secure a advantage. Boilermakers Rodriguez and Dominik Sochurek each fell on courts four and six, respectively, but were covered by Bennett and No. 92 Madarasz's wins. The first outlasted O'Hoisin 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 at the fifth position, and the second overpowered Josef Dodridge 6-3, 6-4 on court one. Raupuk then broke the pattern with his 7-6, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Remy on two, clinching the match for Purdue at 4-2. Mateo Julio closed out the dual with a loss at third.
Up next, the Boilermakers will have a change to make it two in a row as the take on No. 31 Minnesota on Sunday. First serve is again scheduled for noon ET.
