BATON ROUGE, La. - Senior Devynne Charlton broke the 100-meter hurdles school record and won the 100-meter dash Saturday for the 11th-ranked Boilermakers at the LSU Battle on the Bayou. Redshirt freshman Jalil Brewer threw the No. 2 shot put mark in freshman school history to highlight the men's performances.
Charlton won the 100-meter hurdles with a wind-legal (+1.6) time of 12.70 seconds. That time broke her own school record by 0.04 of a second. It also broke the Bernie Moore Track Stadium record, previously held by Olympian Lolo Jones who was in attendance Saturday, by 0.01 of a second. That record had stood since 2010. Charlton, a Bahamian, is now within 0.06 of a second of the Bahamian national record in the event.
Minutes later, Charlton won the 100-meter dash. She ran a windy (+2.1) time of 11.34 seconds. Charlton also led off the 4x100-meter relay team that ran a season-best time. She handed to senior Savannah Roberson, before junior Yakira Love ran the third leg. Senior Savannah Carson brought the stick across the line with a time of 44.39 seconds, which ranks fourth in school history.
Brewer had a big day in the men's shot put. He won the event with a best throw of 19.20 meters (63-00.00). That is a personal record and the fourth-best throw all-time by a Boilermaker. His throw ranks No. 2 in freshman school history just 3.25 inches shy of Nedzad Mulabegovic's rookie record. Brewer's competition was solid throughout with multiple throws over 19 meters (62-4.00).
Sophomore Ashmon Lucas had his best day as a Boilermaker in the discus. He was second with a best mark of 56.61 meters (185-9). That distance ranks sixth in school history.
Senior Symone Black won the women's 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time. She finished with a time of 56.58 seconds to win by nearly two seconds. Her time currently ranks No. 2 in the country. Black also led off the 4x400-meter relay. She ran with teammates sophomore Chloe Abbott, senior Brionna Thomas and senior Jahneya Mitchell. The team won the meet with a time of 3:33.48, which was 2.99 seconds faster than the runners-up.
Thomas and Roberson were in the 200-meter dash and posted identical times of 23.09 seconds to take fourth and fifth, respectively. Both times are faster than the school record, but were aided by the wind (+2.7), so they will not count as records. Abbott ran a windy time of 23.77 seconds to finish eighth.
In the 400-meter dash, Mitchell and Abbott finished second and third, respectively. Mitchell finished with a time of 53.48 seconds, while Abbott crossed the line in 53.65 seconds. Sophomore Samara Miller ran a personal record in the 800-meter run. She finished the half-mile in 2:10.51 to take third.
Senior Micaela Hazlewood was solid in her three throwing events finishing runner-up in all of them. In the discus, she finished with a season-best throw of 53.99 meters (177-2) to take second. In the hammer throw, she finished with a best throw of 57.93m (190-1). In the shot put, her runner-up mark was 15.05m (49-4.50).
Junior Sarah Loesch won the hammer throw with a lifetime best mark. She threw 60.58 meters (198-9), which ranks third in school history.
Sophomore Waseem Williams ran a wind-legal PR in the men's 100-meter dash. He won the event with a time of 10.29 seconds (+1.2). That time ranks third in school history. Freshman Jordan Hollis had a pair of PRs. He posted a time of 21.42 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 47.69 seconds in the 400-meter dash.
Freshman Curtis Eckstein was in the 1,500-meter run and finished with a time just outside Purdue's top 10. He crossed the line in 3:50.88 seconds to take second in the race. Classmate Kyle Griffith was just behind him taking third with a time of 3:51.22.
