Friday Results
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Senior Brionna Thomas broke the school record in the 400-meter dash on the rainy second day of the Florida Relays. Sophomore Ashmon Lucas was the lone Boilermaker to win an event Friday as he took the men's discus throw title.
Thomas was in the elite section of the women's 400-meter dash for her outdoor season-opener. She took third in the race with the nation's third-fastest time this season, crossing the line with a time of 51.72 seconds. Her time is exactly half a second faster than her previous school record which was set last year.
In the men's discus, Lucas fouled his first two attempts. His third attempt was the best of his young career. He recorded a throw of 55.40 meters (181-9), which ranks eighth in school history and put him in the lead. That throw would be his best and won the event by 13 feet.
Senior Jahneya Mitchell ran a PR in the 400-meter dash to finish fifth overall. She crossed the line in 52.68 seconds, which is tied for second in school history with teammate Chloe Abbott. Mitchell's time is the seventh fastest in the country this year. Abbott was also in the event and took eighth overall with a time of 53.08 seconds.
Senior Symone Black ran a season-best time in the 400-meter hurdles to finish second overall, including the top division I finisher. She crossed the line in 57.03 seconds, which is the top time nationally.
The women's 4x400-meter relay 'B' team of sophomore Myia Dorsey, sophomore Samara Miller, sophomore Sekayi Bracey and junior Kyelah Hodges advanced to finals in the event. The group ran a time of 3:41.54, which was the seventh fastest in the prelims of the open section.
Senior Micaela Hazlewood had a solid day in the throws. She placed sixth in the discus with a best throw of 52.01m (170-8). In the hammer throw, she took sixth in the invitational section with a best toss of 58.94m (193-4). Junior Sarah Loesch was seventh in the hammer with a throw of 57.29m (188-0).
Elsewhere, sophomore Jaret Carpenter was in action across the country at the Stanford Invitational. He ran in the 5,000-meter run and had an outdoor PR. He crossed the line with a time of 14:01.23, which ranks second in school history.
