INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - Entering the 2018 BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge, the Purdue men's tennis team aimed to take revenge on No. 39 California after the program narrowly defeated the Boilermakers in the opening round a season ago. However, the Golden Bears had a plan of their own, which they executed flawlessly Friday inside the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. In just under two hours, the nationally ranked squad secured a pair of victories in doubles and picked off three of Purdue's underclassmen in singles to clinch the dual at 4-0. The sweep both stifled Purdue's shot at redemption and ended its four-match win-streak, dating back to Feb. 24.
Freshmen Mateo Julio and Javier Rodriguez exited first in doubles, falling 6-0 to California on court three. No. 39 Athell Bennett and Gergely Madarasz then handed the Golden Bears their first point of the dual with a 6-2 loss on court one.
In singles, the Boilermakers fell in order at the second, third and sixth positions. Sophomore Stephan Koenigsfest exited first in a 6-1, 6-4 loss, while freshman Maksymilian Raupuk walked off second, slipping 6-3, 6-2. Bennett then provided the clinch for the second time during the contest, losing 6-2, 6-3.
Up next, Purdue will face South Florida in the consolation draw of the tournament. First serve is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET Saturday.
