After losing consensus All-American Caleb Swanigan to the NBA Draft a year ago, many pundits thought the Boilermakers would take a step back. However, entering Sunday's regular-season finale against Minnesota, Painter has led the Boilermakers to a 25-5 overall record and 14-3 mark in the Big Ten, ranking in the nation's top 10 in each of the last seven weeks. Purdue reached as high as No. 3 in the AP Top 25 poll, matching Purdue's highest ranking in the last 30 years.

Over the last two years, Purdue owns a Big Ten-best 28-7 record and the Boilermakers are currently 1-of-13 teams in Big Ten history to have won at least 14 league games in back-to-back seasons. Coach Painter has led Purdue to two of the 13 occurrences, also winning 14 or more league games during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
His 315 career wins are the fifth most nationally among active coaches in their 15th season or fewer and he is 1-of-15 NCAA Division I coaches all time to win 300 games in 14 or fewer seasons.
Painter is joined on the list by Rick Barnes (Tennessee), Chris Beard (Texas Tech), Tony Bennett (Virginia), Brad Brownell (Clemson), Mick Cronin (Cincinnati), Chris Holtmann (Ohio State), Chris Mack (Xavier), Bruce Pearl (Auburn) and Jay Wright (Villanova).
