WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sarah Griffith gave Purdue women's soccer a halftime lead and the Boilermakers blew the game open early in the second half, rolling past Indiana State 6-0 Sunday at Folk Field.
Hannah Mussallem and Andrea Petrina both posted their first collegiate multi-goal games. Kylie Hase joined her classmate Griffith as Purdue freshmen to score their first goals Sunday. Maddy Williams and Hannah Melchiorre both assisted on a pair of goals.
Although Griffith scored in both preseason wins, her goal Sunday becomes her first official goal. With she and Hase both recording their first goals, it marked the first time two freshmen scored their first goals in the same game since an August 2014 win vs. Ohio.

MORE SUNDAY NOTABLES
- The Boilermakers (2-1) scored five goals in a half for the first time since a November 2007 win vs. Indiana. The six total goals represent the team's most since tying the program record with eight in an October 2011 victory vs. Indiana.
- Purdue had two players each score twice in the same game for the first time since the 2011 win vs. IU.
- Williams recorded her 20th career assist on Griffith's goal, becoming just the fourth Boilermaker to reach the benchmark. She posted her third career multi-assist effort Sunday.
- It was the first time since 2013 that four Boilermakers scored in the same game and six different players scored over Purdue's first three games.
- Including the two preseason wins, a freshman has scored Purdue's first goal in each of the first five games this year.
- Melchiorre became the first Boilermaker to assist on a pair of goals in a half since September 2015 at Montana. The last multi-goal half by a Purdue player was in that same win. But the 2007 win vs. IU stood as the last time in which two Boilermakers each scored twice in the same half.
- Goalkeepers Katie Luce and Erika Yohn teamed up for Purdue's first combined shutout since September 2015 vs. Evansville.
- The Boilermakers have outscored Indiana State 14-0 in the four all-time regular-season meetings.

Purdue scored in the sixth, 48th, 50th, 64th, 70th and 73rd minutes. The one minute and 58 seconds between the first goals for Mussallem and Petrina represents the shortest amount of time between a pair of Purdue scores since Hadley Stuart and Chinyelu Asher scored 81 seconds apart in a September 2013 win vs. Dartmouth.
Griffith used a nifty crossover dribble to create space from the nearest defender, finishing off the first scoring sequence of the day with a shot from 15 yards out inside the left post.
Mussallem scored two quality goals, the first coming on a shot into the top drawer of the net after a back pass along the right flank from Williams. Sixteen minutes later, she made a well-timed run into the heart of the 18-yard box on a Sarah Clark free kick from the left flank. Mussallem said the ball grazed the head of an ISU player and she was able to poke the ball into the goal out of midair with her knee. The junior now has three career goals.
Petrina scored with a shot off the left post from the top of the six-yard box for her first goal. She connected on a penalty kick for the second time in her career. The senior now has nine career goals, all nine coming at Folk Field.
Hase scored via a deflected shot from the inside edge of the 18-yard box. The ball caromed up and over the Indiana State goalkeeper.
Purdue dominated possession throughout the day, limiting the visitors to just three shots and one corner kick. Luce only had to make once save in the 75 minutes. But the Sycamores (2-1-1) still almost scored a first-half equalizer. Katie Wells hit the left post with a shot from the top of the 18-yard box in the 42nd minute.
The game was played in front of a crowd of 1,141 fans. It marked the fifth year in a row that over 1,100 fans attended the annual GLRSA/Boilers FC youth soccer day at Folk Field.
The Boilermakers continue their season-opening homestand Thursday vs. DePaul. Purdue has won all six all-time meetings with the Blue Demons, but the teams have not played since 2005. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
