All 8 Purdue Divers Qualify for NCAAs

Dive-by-Dive Scoring

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With Max Showalter and Lexi Vincent earning berths at the NCAA Championships on the platforms Saturday at the Zone C Championships, all eight Purdue divers qualified for the national championship meets this week.

Brandon Loschiavo (fourth) and Steele Johnson (fifth) also finished among the top five on platform to qualify for NCAAs in all three diving events. Emily Meaney took third in the platform competition to add the event to her schedule at NCAAs next week. Showalter finished third and Vincent fifth Saturday.

Joe Cifelli, Morgan Meixner, Samm Reese, Johnson, Loschiavo, Meaney, Showalter and Vincent teamed to earn 14 spots for the Boilermakers in the diving events at the national championship meets. Johnson, Loschiavo, Meaney and Reese all qualified in multiple events.

Including Purdue's three swimmers that qualified ââ'¬" Marat Amaltdinov, Taite Kitchel and Kaersten Meitz ââ'¬" the Boilermakers will be represented by 11 student-athletes at the national championship meets in Indianapolis. Six Boilermakers will compete at the women's meet March 16 to 18 and the Purdue men will have five entries a week later at the March 23 to 25 meet.

While the qualification matrix at Zones was changed two years ago, the four diving qualifiers for NCAAs matched a program record (2014) for the Purdue women nonetheless. The men had five diving qualifiers in 2010. For both genders, the Boilermakers have had at least one diving qualifier for NCAAs in 13 of the last 14 years (all but 2012). Purdue has had multiple qualifiers for both genders in every year since 2013.

Entering the day, Showalter and Vincent had to finish among the auto-qualifying spots (top 6 women, top 7 men) because they had not already earned berths at NCAAs. Both sophomores put together strong list scores in the prelims (Showalter 372.3, Vincent 288.4) to put themselves in position to qualify in the final.

Johnson, Loschiavo and Meaney only had to be in the top 12 Saturday. Meaney started strong with a list score of 337.55 in the prelims, essentially assuring she would be in the top 12. Johnson (340.5 finals, 341.55 prelims) and Loschiavo (342.15 finals, 344 prelims) were both very consistent with their list scores and will increase the degree of difficulty of their lists at NCAAs.

Cifelli, Johnson, Showalter and Vincent all qualified for NCAAs for the second time in their careers. Meixner and Reese made it for the first time. Loschiavo and Meaney qualified as freshmen.

The NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships will be held at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Downtown Indianapolis.
