WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's (17-29, 6-8 B1G) bats came alive in the late innings but Wisconsin (27-8, 6-6 B1G) managed to fend off the Boilermakers to earn the 3-1 victory in Bittinger Stadium and take two out of three in the series. Purdue was unable to take advantage of the production out of the middle of the lineup as it left nine runners on base while its two, three and four hitters accounted for five-of-six hits against the Badgers.
Mallory Baker is now hitting .400 on the season and .500 in conference play following her three-for-four day at the plate. Alexa Binckes continued to have an impressive series at the plate as well as she singled and walked in her two at-bats of the game. Stephanie Ramsey had a solid day in the eight hole for the Boilermakers as she was one-for-two with a walk and a run scored. Kristen Hoppman scored her on a two-out double off the wall in left, in an attempt to spark a rally in the seventh inning.
However, even after Baker singled to give the Boilermakers first and second with two outs in the seventh, Purdue was halted by the Badgers, leading to the 3-1 loss. The Boilermakers also had a bases loaded opportunity with one out in the sixth inning but Wisconsin was able to take extra bases away from Lexi Huffman as the third baseman speared a liner to corral the second out and induced a routine grounder to short in order to escape the inning.
Wisconsin took the lead in the first at-bat of the game as Kelsey Jenkins took a 3-2 pitch to straightaway center for her sixth homer of the season. It then tagged Maddie Damon for two more runs in the third before Kaitlynn Moody came in to throw 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, giving the Boilermakers a chance to make a comeback.
Purdue now has a week to prepare for a three-game series in Evanston, Illinois against Northwestern. The first game of the series is slated for Friday, April 21 at 7 p.m.
