WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Iowa's (7-21, 1-4 B1G) Allison Doocy threw a complete game shutout to clip Purdue's (15-22, 4-1) winning streak at five games on Saturday in Bittinger Stadium. The outcome is the Boilermakers' first home loss of the season.
Timely hits were the difference in the loss as three of Iowa's five runs were scored with two outs in the inning and the Boilermakers were unable to convert on three leadoff hits, two of which were for extra bases.
Purdue's best chances to score came in the third, fourth and fifth inning as the Boilermakers' leadoff hitter reached base safely but were unable to capitalize. Of their six runners left on base, three were in scoring position.
Trailing 3-0, Lexi Huffman roped a single up the middle but Iowa was able to record outs in the three at-bats to follow. Madison Baker then kicked off the fourth inning with her 10th double of the season and her third of the series. She later advanced to third on a single through the right side by Kaylah Hampton, giving the Boilermakers runners on first and third with just one out. However, Doocy was able to get a groundout and a strikeout to retire the side.
Huffman registered her second hit of the day, scorching a double down the right field line to kick off the bottom of the fifth and advanced to third on a pinch-hit single by Stephanie Ramsey. With runners on first and third and nobody out, Iowa's defense came through for Doocy, reining in a liner to the third baseman and doubling off Ramsey trying to get back to first. The Hawkeyes escaped the inning with their lead intact with a routine play by the shortstop in the ensuing at-bat.
Huffman finished the day three-for-three at the plate with Ramsey, Hoppman, Baker and Hampton all registering a hit each. Katie Johnson pitched well in relief as she threw the final two innings of the game without allowing an earned run.
The series will be decided Sunday at noon in Bittinger Stadium, marking the conclusion of Purdue's seven-game homestand.
