WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team prepares for two matches this weekend; the first against Michigan State at 2 p.m. ET Saturday and the second against No. 18 Michigan at noon Sunday. Both competitions will be played at the Schwartz Tennis Center -- outside, weather permitting.
The Boilermakers are coming off of a 4-0 loss at No. 20 Northwestern following their strong showing at the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge during spring break. Saturday's match will be the first at home for Purdue in exactly one month. The Boilermakers last defeated No. 23 Illinois 4-3 in West Lafayette, Indiana.
As for their competitors, Michigan State enters 10-9, but without a win in the Big Ten Conference; most recently, the Spartans fell 7-0 to No. 2 Ohio State. The Wolverines also lost to the Buckeyes earlier this month, but have earned wins against Michigan State, Penn State and as of Friday, Indiana. Michigan shutout the Hoosiers 7-0 before traveling north to Purdue.
Both matches will feature a slew of ranked players as the Boilermakers boast the No. 7 doubles team in the nation in Gergely Madarasz and Ricky Medinilla; the junior and senior are also ranked No. 68 and No. 123 in singles, respectively. The Wolverines' lineup includes three ranked singles players as well as three ranked pairings in doubles. Jathan Malik, No. 91 in singles, is a part of two of those tandems; he is ranked No. 5 with partner Kevin Wong and No. 30 with Connor Johnston.
