SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ââ'¬" The Purdue men's golf team got strong efforts from Fernando Barco and Jarle Volden and finished in a fourth-place tie at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate held at Desert Mountain's Outlaw Course.
The Boilermakers finished in a fourth-place tie with Kansas at 4-under par 860. Purdue recorded rounds of 281-291-288=860 to finish nine shots off the pace set by Michigan at 13-under par. Northwestern was second at 11-under par, while Alabama recorded the best round of the day at 6-under par to surge into third at 7-under par.
"We had some strong performances by Fernando (Barco) and Jarle (Volden), but we need to do better and play with more consistency as a team" head coach Rob Bradley said. "Everyone has shown signs of improvement and have the ability to produce really low scores. I really think we are getting close as a team and will keep getting better as the season progresses."
Barco paced the Boilermakers by finishing third at 8-under par 208 (71-66-71), his third career top-five finish and second straight top-15 finish. Barco was 4-under par through 13 holes before a double-bogey on No. 14 dropped him out of the lead. He'd play his final four holes in 1-over par to finish third, his best finish of the year.
"Fernando had a very solid performance and put himself in contention for medalist honors," Bradley said. "He will really be able to use this as a learning opportunity moving forward this spring."
Barco's 54-hole score of 208 is tied for the 13th-best score in school history.
Meanwhile, Volden also had a splendid tournament, finishing tied for 12th at 2-under 214 (67-77-70). Volden recovered from a rough second round for his career-best placing and 54-hole score. The sophomore from Norway recorded an ace on the fourth hole and finished the round with five birdies en route to his 2-under par 70.
"Jarle had his best finish of his career and outside of a few holes during the second round, he played really well this weekend," Bradley added. "I've been really encouraged by some of his individual performances this spring."
Austin Eoff tied for 25th at 2-over par 218 (71-74-73), while Brian Carlson was tied for 32nd at 5-over par 221 (73-74-74) and Timmy Hildebrand was tied for 49th at 11-over par 227 (72-80-75).
Individually, Thomas Lewis finished tied for 43rd at 9-over par 225 (73-74-78).
Purdue will be off for three weeks before competing in the Hootie at Bull's Bay Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina, on March 25-26.
