LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Purdue women's golf team split a pair of matches at the Gifford Great 8 Match Play, hosted by UCLA at Brentwood Country Club on Monday, opening with a victory over Ohio State, but falling to second-ranked USC in the semifinals. The fourth-seeded Boilermakers will face Colorado tomorrow in the third-place match, scheduled for 11 a.m. ET tomorrow.
The Boilermakers got off to a fantastic start against Ohio State, racing out to leads at all five positions, most notably behind senior August Kim, who stretched her lead to 4-up after five holes. Kim held on to her lead to earn a 5&4 win over Katja Pogacar, while freshman Micaela Farah notched a 2&1 victory over Ohio State's Niki Schroeder. Ohio State caught fire at the other three positions to rally from deficits and half each match, but couldn't overcome the Boilermakers and Purdue advanced with the 3.5-1.5 victory.
Kim emerged victorious again in the semifinals against the Trojans, but was the only Boilermaker to earn a win in the match as USC won 3.5-1.5. Kim played par golf through 15 holes against Victoria Morgan, making one birdie and one bogey in the 3&2 victory. Purdue sophomore Covadonga SanJuan trailed for 13 holes against Gabriella Then, but battled back to take a lead of her own late before conceding the final hole to tie. Junior Marta Martin came up just short against Muni He, 2&1, while Linn Andersson fell to Tiffany Chan, 5&4, and Farah fell to Robynn Ree, 3&2.
USC advances to face tournament-host UCLA for the event title tomorrow.
