COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Savannah Carson broke the school record and tied the Big Ten record to finish fifth in the country in the long jump Friday at the NCAA Championships. Carson put the women on the board with four points, good for 21st place after day one.
Carson's final jump of her indoor collegiate career was her best one, as she moved from eighth to fifth in the competition. She leapt 6.48 meters (21-3.25), which is a PR by two centimeters and broke Leah Eber's 2012 school record by one centimeter. Carson's mark also tied the all-time Big Ten record, which was set by Indiana's Rose Richmond in 2003.
Carson opened the long jump competition with a leap of 6.36 meters (20-10.50), which put her in third through the first round of jumps. After fouling her second attempt, Carson leapt 6.28m (20-7.25) on her third attempt to enter finals in fourth place. She jumped 6.19m (20-3.75) on her fourth attempt, which put her in fifth place. On her fifth attempt, she leapt 6.25m (20-6.25) and was in seventh heading into the final round.
Carson earned first team All-America honors. She's the second Boilermaker in program history to do so in the event and the first since Eber in 2012. Eber finished third at that meet with a leap of 6.43m (21-1.25).
Devynne Charlton competed in two events Friday with the 60m dash and 60m hurdles. She ran a time of 7.38 seconds to finish 16th in the country and earn second team All-America honors. She came back in the 60m hurdles, the event in which she ranks second in the country. There, Charlton won her heat with a time of 7.98 seconds to automatically advance to the finals. Her time was the second fastest overall in the prelims. She'll compete in the finals Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
Janae' Moffitt finished 11th in the country in the women's high jump in her first trip to the indoor NCAA Championships. She cleared 1.76m (5-9.25) on her second attempt to earn second team All-America honors.
Brionna Thomas and Symone Black competed in the 400m dash and finished 13th and 15th in the country, respectively. Thomas finished fourth in her heat with a time of 53.17 seconds, while Black was fourth in her heat with a time of 53.66 seconds. Both earn second team All-America honors.
Saturday, Thomas, Black and the women's 4x400m relay team will compete in the finals at 7:30 p.m.
