WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Devynne Charlton broke the 60-meter dash school record in her first meet racing for the Boilermakers this season. Purdue won 20 events on the day, with 10 apiece on the men's and women's sides.
Charlton opened with the 60m dash prelims, where she breezed to a heat win in 7.55 seconds to qualify for finals. There, she would be up against four teammates, including school-record holder Savannah Carson. Charlton had a great start and led the entire way, crossing the line in 7.30 seconds to break the record by 0.02 of a second. Carson finished second in the race with a time of 7.39 seconds. Charlton's time currently ranks third in the country and the best in the Big Ten, while Carson's is eighth in the country and second in the conference. Carmiesha Cox was third and Sekayi Bracey fourth in the event with times of 7.49 and 7.61 seconds. Cox then won the women's 200m dash. She ran a time of 24.42 seconds, which converts to 24.05 seconds due to track size. The converted time is ninth in the country.
Charlton also competed in the 60m hurdles, which was right after the 60m dash. She cruised to a prelims win with a time of 8.36 seconds, before running away with the final with a time of 8.14 seconds. Her time ranks second in the country. Shantyra Delaney was second in the event with a time of 8.60 seconds, while Savannah Roberson with third in 8.76 seconds. Alexis Pierre-Antoine took fourth.
Brionna Thomas and the women's 400m runners had a strong day. Thomas won the event with a time of 55.04 seconds, which converts to 54.32 seconds, which is currently the best in the country. Thomas was patient through the first 250 meters, running towards the back of the lead group before making a move to get the win. Symone Black was the second collegiate finisher and crossed the line in 55.39 seconds, which converts to 54.67. Her converted time is currently second in the country.
Chloe Abbott and Myia Dorsey were the third and fourth collegiate finishers in the 400m dash. Abbott's time was 56.44, which converts to 55.70 seconds, while Dorsey finished in 56.60 seconds, a 55.86-second converted time. Those rank seventh and ninth in the country, respectively, early in the track season.
Janae' Moffitt won the women's high jump. She cleared 1.76m (5-9.25) and jumped at her PR of 1.81m (5-11.25), but came up just short. She still ranks fourth in the country with her clearance of 1.79m (5-10.50) from the season opener last month. Earlier in the day, Carson won the women's long jump with a leap of 6.15m (20-2.50). That mark ranks fourth in the country and the best in the Big Ten this season.
Sarah Loesch had a big PR in the weight throw. She was the top collegiate finisher at the meet with a mark of 19.89m (65-3.25), which ranks fifth in school history. Loesch currently ranks 10th in the country and second in the conference.
The Purdue women had no trouble winning the 4x400m relay Saturday. The team of Abbott, Black, Thomas and Dorsey finished with a time of 3:45.88 to win by 10.39 seconds. The time converts to 3:42.92, which is fifth in the country and the best in the Big Ten.
Rebecca Coan won the pentathlon, which was contested Thursday. She finished with 3,235 points and a converted total of 3,256. Susan Hubbard won the 800m with a time of 2:16.68, which converts to 2:15.13, while Rachel Yuska won the mile.
On the men's side, Malcolm Dotson won a pair of events. He backed up his 6.79-second time from the 60-meter dash prelims with a time of 6.78 seconds in finals to win. In the 200m, he ran a time of 21.87 seconds, which converts to 21.49 seconds, to win by 0.60 seconds. Dotson's 200m time is ninth in the country. Keanu Pennerman was the second collegian to finish in both events. He finished with times of 6.80 and 22.47 seconds, respectively. Pennerman's 200m time converts to 22.08 seconds, while his 60m time ranks 19th in the country.
Kinard Rolle had a big day in the 400m dash. He won the event with a time of 47.89 seconds, which converts to 47.14. That time is currently the best in the country. Shawndail McLaren was second in the event with a time of 48.77 seconds, a 48.01 conversion, which ranks eighth. Obokhare Ikpefan and Kyle Webb were third and fourth, respectively, in the event. The same four teamed to compete in the 4x400m relay, which they won with a time of 3:15.27. That converts to 3:12.21, which is top-10 in the country.
Justin Veteto won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.03 seconds. That time is 18th in the country. Eric Blackman won the high jump with a clearance of 2.01m (6-7), while Anaquan Peterson won the long jump and triple jump. His triple jump mark was 15.69m (51-5.00), which is tied for the top mark in the country.
Luke Lewis had a PR in the shot put and finished with a mark of 17.81m (58-5.25) to win. His mark ranks ninth in the country. Caleb Fricke won the men's weight throw with a best mark of 17.64m (57-10.75).
The Boilermakers are back in action next week with a trip to Bloomington, Indiana, to take on the Hoosiers in the annual Purdue vs. IU Dual. A pair of Governor's Cup points will be on the line in the all-sport battle between the rivals.
