WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sixth-ranked Nebraska proved to be too much for Purdue in a 28-9 Big Ten Conference dual in Holloway Gymnasium on Friday. A trio of Boilermakers provided decisions, highlighted by back-to-back sudden victory wins from Dylan Lydy and Jacob Morrissey. The Huskers improved to 11-1 and 5-1 in the league, while Purdue moved to 8-4 and 3-3.
With seven seconds on the clock, Lydy scored the match-winning takedown to defeat Nebraska's Dustin Williams 3-1. The 165-pounders were deadlocked at 1-1 with both wrestlers scoring with an escape. The win for Lydy is his third in a row as the redshirt freshman pushed his record to 16-13.
In the ensuing match at 174 pounds, Morrissey overcame a call reversal that occurred with just seconds remaining in regulation and went on to post a 10-8 decision of Micah Barnes. Barnes registered three takedowns in the first period to take a 6-2 lead. A Morrissey four-point nearfall as time expired in the second period put him ahead 7-6. The lead changed again as the Husker capitalized on a neutral start in the third, but Morrissey evened it at 8-8 with an escape.
With the clock nearing 0:00, Morrissey took Barnes down and the takedown was awarded, however the points were waived off as Barnes was evaluated through the concussion protocol, sending the match to sudden victory.
"I got the two and I knew he had hit his head," Morrissey said. "They stopped the match and I was ready for the refs to take the two away. I didn't want to think that the match was over and I got this, then all of the sudden he come back then I would have to mentally get ready again. I told myself that it's going to go into sudden victory, I have to stay strong and keep mentally focused."
The redshirt junior from Oconto Falls, Wisconsin, scored the winning takedown 29 seconds into the 60-second winner-take-all session. Morrissey's record stands at 12-6 after winning his fifth straight Big Ten match and his sixth consecutive dual match.
"I'm going into matches where I want to be mentally," Morrissey said. "I am focused and I am also knowing my positions. I know where I'm good and where I want the match to go. I think I've done a lot better job at understanding my own wrestling and being mentally prepared."
The Boilermakers also received a decision from Nate Limmex at 149 pounds. Limmex scored a first period takedown, tilted for a four-point nearfall in the second and accumulated 1:30 of riding time en route to a 7-3 decision of Collin Purinton.
Purdue will have a quick turnaround, wrestling No. 13 Minnesota at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday inside Holloway Gymnasium.
