WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Governor's Cup points will be on the line Saturday as the track & field teams head to Bloomington, Indiana, to take on the Hoosiers in the 40th annual indoor dual. Competition is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. ET at Gladstein Fieldhouse. The meet will be broadcast live on BTN Plus online.
The 10th-ranked women are looking for their fourth win in a row in the series. Last year's meet saw the Boilermakers win 85-53, paced by wins in seven of 10 running events. Devynne Charlton led Purdue with 13 points, while Savannah Carson added 10 in the 5-3-1 scoring system.
Three Boilermakers enter the meet as a reigning Big Ten Athlete of the Week, as Charlton was tabbed the women's track athlete, Kinard Rolle the men's track athlete and Anaquan Peterson the men's field athlete for their performances at the Gene Edmonds Open.
Purdue looks to build on the early season success that has seen the Boilermakers put 14 marks in the top 10 in the country this season, including two nation-leading marks. Two school records have also fallen already this season.
The women's deep, veteran sprints group will be on display Saturday with Charlton, Carson, Carmiesha Cox, Brionna Thomas, Symone Black, Savannah Roberson and Shantyra Delaney. Each of them has scored in a previous Purdue vs. Indiana Dual. Freshmen Chloe Abbott, Sekayi Bracey, Myia Dorsey and Alexis Pierre-Antoine will get their first shot at the Hoosiers, as will transfer Jahneya Mitchell, who will compete for Purdue for the first time. Freshman Emma Benner will compete on the track for the first time after qualifying for the national championships in cross country. She is slated to run the 3,000-meter race.
In the women's field events, Sarah Loesch has opened the year with a pair of personal records in the weight throw. The sophomore is nearing 20 meters (65-7.50) and currently ranks 11th in the country. Carson leads the women's long jumpers and is currently eighth in the country, but Big Ten scorer Yamani Hunter and newcomers Bracey and Jaden Mattox provide quality depth in the event. Janae' Moffitt enters the high jump as the top competitor in the event. She is currently ranked eighth in the country.
On the men's side, the Boilermakers have been led by a handful of stellar individual performances. Peterson and Rolle currently boast the top mark in the country in the triple jump and 400m dash, respectively. Peterson will also compete in the long jump, where he is No. 26 nationally, alongside Gerald McGee who is competing for the first time this season. Malcolm Dotson has the No. 6 60-meter dash time nationally, as well as the No. 11 200m dash time. Both are the best entering Saturday's meet.
Keanu Pennerman cracked the school's top 10 in the 60m dash last week. He is slated to run in the event as well as the 200m dash. The talented 400m group of Rolle, Shawndail McLaren, Obokhare Ikpefan and Kyle Webb is scheduled to run in the event as well as the 4x400m relay. All four earned first team All-America honors last season. Jaret Carpenter will toe the line for the first time during the track season after qualifying for the cross country national championships in the fall.
