WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 15-ranked Purdue men's basketball team opens its 119th season of competition Friday as McNeese State visits Mackey Arena for the season opener for both teams.

The Boilermakers have had success in season openers, posting a 97-21 record in its 118 previous season openers, including a 10-1 mark under head coach Matt Painter. Purdue has won three openers in a row with the last two coming by a combined margin of 81 points.

In the 11 season openers under Painter, Purdue's defense has been outstanding, holding foes to 58.7 points per game. Six times during those 11 games, opponents have scored 50 or fewer points and the team are shooting just a combined 209-of-608 (.344) from the field and 50-of-178 (.281) from 3-point range. Over the last two games, opponents are just 29-of-124 (.234) from the field and 3-of-35 (.086) from long distance.

Purdue has been almost unbeatable at home as well, winning eight straight games dating to last year and posting a 23-1 record in Mackey Arena over the last 24 games dating to the 2014-15 season. During the month of November, Purdue is even better, recording a 37-1 mark under Painter at home.

The Boilermakers return three starters and eight letterwinners from last year's team that posted a 26-9 record and was ranked in the nation's top 25 all year long. This year's team is ranked in the top 20 of nearly all preseason polls.
