TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ââ'¬" Emma Benner and Kiara McIntosh had great days for the women's cross country team while Jaret Carpenter paced the men's side Saturday at the Pre-National meet. The women finished 19th with 565 points, while the men were 16th with 499.
Both teams went up against the best teams and individuals in the country. The women's side had seven teams ranked in the top 25, including two in the top five, while the men's race featured six teams in the top 20, including three of the top six.
In her first career 6,000-meter race, Benner finished 21st against the loaded field. She ran a time of 20:35.8. Her time was faster than more than more than 10 individuals who competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships last season, including two who finished inside the top 40 at that meet. Benner was among the lead group for the entire race and was the top Boilermaker for the fourth race in a row. She was the third freshman finisher at the race.
McIntosh had a big day for the women as well. She ran a time of 20:42.0 to finish 25th. She finished ahead of one All-American from last year's NCAA Championships. McIntosh was second for the Boilermakers and was ahead of No. 2 runners from numerous ranked teams, including No. 5 Portland and No. 7 Stanford.
Mary Abramson was the third finisher for the women. She had a time of 21:45.8 to take 135th. Alyssa Christoffer was fourth for the Boilermakers, crossing the line in 22:03.2 for 185th. Jenna Halderman rounded out the scoring with a time of 22:12.1, which was 200th overall.
The women finished ahead of conference foes Ohio State, Iowa and Northwestern, just two weeks before the Big Ten Championships.
On the men's side, Carpenter was the top finisher for Purdue for the fourth straight meet. He finished 65th with a time of 25:01.3 in the 8,000-meter race. Jeremy Craven had a solid day finishing second for Purdue. The junior ran a time of 25:07.4 to take 75th. Ben Anderson was third for Purdue and 95th overall with a time of 25:15.3. Matthew Grider was fourth with a 117th place finish. His time was 25:23.4. Ben Mohrdieck rounded out the scoring for the Boilermakers. He took 147th with a time of 25:37.5.
The men finished ahead of Big Ten foes Nebraska and Iowa.
