WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermakers participated in the Light the Night Walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for the seventh straight season Thursday. The team raised more than $3,300 for the charity with this year's fundraising efforts.

Purdue softball's relationship with LLS began in 2010 when infielder Ashley Courtney lost her father Mike to lymphoma. Courtney, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection from 2010 to 2013, and her family began supporting the Light the Night Walk and the Boilermakers joined the fight as well.

The Courtney family participates in the Light the Night Walk under the team name Angels in the Outfield, while the Boilermakers do so under a separate Purdue Softball account. Every dollar counts in the fight against leukemia and lymphoma and every dollar donated to LLS goes toward helping families who are battling blood cancers and to help LLS with research. Over the past six years (2010 to 2015), the groups combined to raise more than $75,000.

In 2016, the softball team, led by team coordinator Morgan Cavinder, made a goal to raise $2,500 and thanks to friends, fans and family, the Boilermakers exceeded that mark by 35 percent, with Friday morning's tally coming in at $3,354.
