FLUSHING MEADOWS, New York ââ'¬" Rafaella Baquerizo, a freshman on the Purdue women's tennis team, was in action at the US Open Junior Tennis Championship Qualifying Draw at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Friday.
Baquerizo, who is No. 106 in the ITF girls' rankings, represented her home country of Ecuador while going up against Shelly Krolitzky of Israel in the first round. The first set went to Krolitzky 6-4. The 78th-ranked Israeli took the match with a 6-0 outing in the second set to bounce Baquerizo out of the 32-player draw.
Baquerizo and the Boilermakers will open fall competition at the Bradley Invitational on Sept. 23.
