VALENCIA, Spain -- The Purdue men's basketball toured Valencia on Friday morning, before getting the afternoon off for free time in the Mediterranean Sea port city.
The Boilermakers arrived in Valencia last night about 10 p.m. local time and headed to the beach to find restaurants for a bite to eat.
This morning, the Boilermakers toured Valencia, the third-largest city in Spain behind Madrid and Barcelona with just under 900,000 residents. The port of Valencia is the fifth-busiest container port in Europe and the busiest on the Mediterranean Sea.
The city is also known for its vibrant downtown, the aquarium, racing, sailing and oranges. The city hosted the 2007 Americas Cup and is a prime figure in the European Formula 1 prize. The city is the largest exporter in Spain of oranges, rice and furniture.
The aquarium is the largest in Europe and houses over 45,000 animals and has 42 million cubic liters of saltwater flowing through it.
The city market which holds fresh fruit, vegetables, wine, cheese and seafood is the largest in Europe.
Purdue will make a five-hour drive to Barcelona on Saturday and spend the rest of its time in the host city of the 1992 Olympics. Purdue will play games against the Barcelona Region All-Stars (Sunday) and the European Basketball Academy (Monday) before returning home next Wednesday.
