Boilermakers Enjoying Successful Summer

July 22, 2016

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Several members of the Purdue men's golf team have had successful summers in preparation for the start of the 2016-17 season in September.

Leading Purdue's contingent this summer has been rising junior Brian Carlson. The Madison, Connecticut, native placed tied for fourth at the Northeast Amateur, tied for fifth at the Monroe Invitational and tied for 14th at the New England Amateur that concluded Thursday. He is also the first alternate out of qualifying at the Ellington Ridge Country Club for the U.S. Amateur in mid-August.

Carlson and teammate Austin Eoff will compete in the prestigious Western Amateur on Aug. 1 to 6, at the Knollwood Club in Lake Forest, Illinois. Past Western Amateur champions include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Justin Leonard, Ryan Moore, Scott Verplank and Hal Sutton, in what is considered one of the highest-profile amateur tournaments in the country.

Eoff, meanwhile, won his second straight Arkansas Amateur title in June and will compete in a U.S. Amateur qualifier on Monday at Maumelle Country Club in Maumelle, Arkansas. The rising senior from Benton, Arkansas, is a three-time All-Big Ten selection.

Fernando Barco, a rising senior from Lima, Peru, is the lone Boilermaker to win an event this summer, claiming the Abierto Golf Para Todos by nine shots. Barco, who also won the 2015 event, fired a three-round total of 8-under par 208 (72-69-67) at the Lima Golf Club. Barco, who advanced to last year's U.S. Amateur, will compete in Monday's U.S. Amateur qualifying at the Kampen Course.

Rising sophomore Timmy Hildebrand finished second at the Indiana Open last weekend. The 2015 champ was looking to become the first repeat amateur winner since Purdue legend Joe Campbell won the event in 1955 and 1956.

Rising sophomore Jarle Volden is currently competing in the competitive German Amateur Championship. After yesterday's first round, the Oslo, Norway, native is tied for third after an opening-round, two-under par 69.

In addition, incoming freshmen Tyler Green, Thomas Lewis and James Thompson have all competed in several events over the summer to tune up for their arrivals at Purdue.
