Purdue Summer Storylines
- Purdue returns three starters from last year's squad that finished with a 26-9 overall record and a 12-6 mark in the Big Ten standings. The Boilermakers started the year 11-0, won the Hall of Fame Tipoff Classic and reached the title game of the Big Ten Tournament.
- Purdue's three returning starters are all underclassmen as junior Vincent Edwards (hon. mention All-Big Ten), junior P.J. Thompson (school-record holder in assist/turnover ratio) and sophomore Caleb Swanigan (Big Ten All-Freshman team) all played significant roles last year.
- Purdue's returning leaders: Scoring -- Vincent Edwards (11.3), Rebounding -- Caleb Swanigan (8.3), Assists -- Vincent Edwards (2.9), Blocked Shots -- Isaac Haas (27), Steals -- P.J. Thompson (24), 3-Pointers made -- Vincent Edwards (46), Minutes -- Vincent Edwards (27.5).
- Purdue's 26 wins last year were the sixth most in a season in school history, and the Boilermakers are 1-of-3 Big Ten teams to receive a Big Ten Tournament double-bye in each of the last two seasons (Purdue, Michigan State, Maryland).
- Purdue went 17-1 at home, setting a school record for most home victories. Since the start of Big Ten play in 2014-15, Purdue has won 25 of its last 27 home games, with the lone losses coming to Maryland (2014-15) and Iowa (2015-16). Over the last two years, Purdue is 31-4 at Mackey Arena. It's current eight-game home winning streak is the 19th-longest streak in the country and the second longest streak in the Big Ten.
- Purdue won its seventh straight Big Ten / ACC Challenge game with a 72-59 road win at Pittsburgh on Dec. 1. The seven straight victories is the second-longest win streak in the event's history behind a 10-game winning streak by Duke (1999-08). Five of Purdue's seven wins in the event have been by double-digits.
- Over the last 10 years, Purdue ranks fourth in the Big Ten in overall wins (229), Big Ten wins (110) and third in NCAA Tournament bids (8; behind Michigan State and Wisconsin).
- Purdue finished the season ranked 37th in field goal percentage and 10th in field goal percentage defense. Purdue is 1-of-9 teams to rank in the top 40 of both categories (Purdue, SMU, Kansas, Evansville, Gonzaga, Michigan State, Kentucky, Villanova, Louisville). It also marks the second straight year that Purdue has finished in the top 100 of both categories after not accomplishing that in Painter's first nine years.
- Purdue's scoring margin of 12.7 points per game ranked third in school history. Meanwhile, Purdue's 47.0 percent field goal percentage was its highest since the 1997-98 season (.484).
- Purdue's 77.9 points per game average last season was its highest of the Matt Painter era by over five points per game (2010-11; 72.5 PPG).
- Purdue's 268 3-pointers made last season were the second most in school history and its 36.7 3-point percentage was the third-highest percentage of the Painter era. Purdue shot 38.3 percent from long distance in Big Ten play. Purdue had six players with at least 30 3-pointers for the first time in school history.
- Purdue's top four returning 3-point shooters (Edwards, Thompson, Mathias, Cline) combined to shoot 88-of-209 (.421) from long distance during Big Ten play.
- Purdue's +10.5 rebound margin ranked third nationally and set a school record by 2.9 rebounds per game. Purdue outrebounded 33 of its 35 opponents, including 11 teams by 15 or more rebounds. Purdue was the last team nationally to be outrebounded, coming on Feb. 13, against Michigan.
- Purdue's 615 assists were the third most in school history and its 1.45 assist/turnover ratio was the fifth-best ratio in Purdue history.
- With A.J. Hammons winning the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year honors, the Purdue program has won a league-best nine Defensive Player of the Year honors, including seven of the last 14 honors and two straight.
- Purdue's non-conference schedule may be one of the toughest in school history. Purdue will host defending national champion Villanova, face Louisville in the ACC / Big Ten Challenge, Notre Dame in the Crossroads Classic, Arizona State in the Jimmy V Classic and either Texas Tech or Auburn in the Cancun Challenge.
