WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Former Purdue women's golfer Paula Reto was named to the 2016 South African Olympic Team, and will compete in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, on Aug. 17-20. Golf returns to the Summer Olympics for the first time since 1904, and will be held at a new Olympic golf course built within the Reserva de Marapendi in the Barra da Tijuca zone.
Reto has played professionally since 2013, earning her LPGA card in 2014, and starred for the Boilermakers from 2009 to 2013. One of three First Team All-Americans in Purdue history (Maria Hernandez, Maude-Aimee LeBlanc), Reto was recognized nationally in 2012 and 2013, in addition to winning the Big Ten individual crown in 2013. She earned the 2013 Mary Fossum Award (low season strokes average), and was a three-time First Team All-Big Ten pick as well. She owns the Purdue records for both 18 and 54 holes, shooting an eight-under, 64, at the 2012 Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate, and firing a 10-under, 216 (71-69-66), at the 2013 NCAA West Regional Championships. She took third, individually, at the 2013 NCAA Championships, and played on the 2010 NCAA Championship squad as well.
Reto will play alongside South African veteran player Ashleigh Simon at the Olympics, and plans to attend the opening ceremonies.
