June 8, 2016 WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- For just the fourth time in the last 16 years, the Purdue men's basketball team finished the season in the top 20 in average attendance it was announced today as the NCAA released its annual attendance figures.
Widely regarded as one of the loudest arenas in America, Mackey Arena averaged 13,662 fans per game to rank 20th nationally in average attendance and the 245,916 fans through the gates were 17th nationally. The 245,916 fans were the second most in Mackey Arena history, just 844 fans shy of the school record (246,744) set during the 2008-09 season.
It marked Purdue's highest ranking since finishing 17th during the 2010-11 season and it was just the fourth time in the last 16 years that Purdue ranked in the top 20 (17th in 2010-11; 20th in 2009-10; 18th in 2008-09). In terms of percentage of capacity, Purdue was at 92.0 percent this year to rank 28th nationally in that category.
It marked the 47th time in 49 seasons that Purdue averaged at least 11,000 fans per game. In 49 seasons of play at Mackey Arena, the Boilermakers own a 590-136 (.813) record, including a 154-32 (.828) mark in 11 seasons under head coach Matt Painter.
Purdue is coming off a 26-9 season and was one of 10 teams nationally to be ranked in the nation's top 25 all season. The Boilermakers finished tied for third in the Big Ten Conference with a 12-6 record.
