Men's Accepted Entries / Women's Accepted Entries
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue track & field will send 34 athletes to compete in 35 events at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Jacksonville, Florida, the NCAA announced Thursday afternoon. The 34 athletes are eight higher than last season, while the 35 entries are 14 more than the Boilermakers had in 2015.
The Boilermakers have the most combined men's and women's NCAA East Prelims entries among the eight Big Ten schools in the east region. The women's 21 entries are four more than any other conference school in the east. Combined with the five Big Ten schools in the NCAA West Prelims, the Purdue women's total is tied for the second-most in the conference, while the Boilermakers' combined total ranks third. A full breakdown of each Big Ten school's qualifiers is below.
To qualify for the preliminary rounds, individuals must be among the top 48 declared student-athletes in their event, while relay teams must be top 24.
The Boilermakers are seeing unprecedented success in regional qualifying. The 35 combined entries are the most in program history since the regional draws changed from four sites to two in 2010. Previously, the Boilermakers had qualified entries in 21 events last year, 29 in 2014, 19 in 2013, 12 in 2012, 24 in 2011 and 19 in 2010. Head coach Rolando Greene, in his fourth year at Purdue, is responsible for the teams with the two most qualified entries, and three of the top four.
To qualify for the NCAA Championships, individuals and relay teams must finish in the top 12 at the regional.
