STILLWATER, Okla. --- Freshman Jarle Volden fired a 1-over par 73 and the Boilermakers sit in a fifth-place tie after 18 holes at the NCAA Stillwater Regional.
The Boilermakers recorded a 15-over par 303 to finish the opening round in a fifth-place tie with Augusta. No. 6-ranked Oklahoma State, playing on its home course, recorded a 3-under par 285 to lead Oklahoma by seven shots. Big Ten member Northwestern and Louisville are tied for third at 12-over par. McNeese State is seventh at 19-over par.
The Boilermakers are just three shots out of third place.
As expected, Karsten Creek showed its teeth on day one under ideal conditions. Light showers fell intermittently throughout the day and there was virtually no wind and the greens were slower than normal. Despite good scoring conditions, the first-round scoring average was 78.12 and just six players were under par for the day.
"I thought Jarle (Volden) played great today, shooting 1-over as a freshman on that golf course is a great score. He really kept us in it today," head coach Rob Bradley said. "Austin (Eoff), Brian (Carlson) and Fernando (Barco) just did a good job making pars and just staying in it on a really challenging golf course.
Volden, a freshman from Oslo, Norway, playing in his first NCAA Regional, had an impressive round with a 1-over par 73, good for an 11th-place tie after 18 holes. Volden recorded just one birdie on the day, but managed 15 pars and just two bogeys. His 73 is his seventh-best score of the season, coming in his 30th round.
Barco is tied for 20th at 3-over par 75, after registering 16 pars on his card. He ran into trouble on the par-3 third hole, his 12th hole of the day, hitting the ball into a water hazard and settling for a double-bogey. He also three-putted the par-3 seventh hole for a bogey, but managed his way around the course in impressive fashion, leading the field in pars (16).
Brian Carlson is tied for 28th after shooting a 5-over par 77. Carlson recorded a triple bogey and a double-bogey during his round, but played the other 16 holes in even-par. Carlson recorded a pair of big birdies, including one on his final hole -- the par-5 ninth, to move him into the top 30.
Austin Eoff is tied for 36th at 6-over par 78, while Stuart Macdonald is tied for 71st.
Purdue ranked second in the tournament field in pars (60), but netted the second-fewest birdies of any team in the field (7). The Boilermakers played the par-3's and par-5's in even par, the third-best score in the field, but played the par-4's in a combined 31-over par, ranking 11th in the field in par-4 scoring.
"We just need to do a better job keeping the ball in play. We let it get away from us some today and had some bigger numbers because of it. All in all, we are right there and a good round tomorrow will make a huge difference," Bradley said.
The Boilermakers will be paired with Northwestern and Augusta for their second round, teeing off hole No. 10 at 8:20 a.m. CT / 9:20 a.m. ET. Tomorrow's weather forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms and light winds.
