Friday Results / Team Scores
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Boilermakers won two events and broke two facility records Friday on the first day of the Conference Clash.
The Power 4 conferences, which comprise the Big Ten, ACC, Big 12 and Pac 12, lead the Southeastern Conference 28-24 on the women's side, while the SEC leads 28-21 on the men's side. The Purdue women lead the Power 4 conference teams with eight points on the first day, while the men are tied for second with five points scored.
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi opened the day for the Boilermakers with the weight throw. The senior, who has the best mark in the world this year, was up against his toughest competition, as the No. 2 thrower in the world, Cameron Brown of Tennessee, was also competing. Enekwechi had a consistent series, all over 22 meters (72 feet, two inches), and led from start to finish. His best mark was 22.79m (74-9.25), which broke the facility record by two feet, five and a quarter inches, won the meet by nearly a foot and a half. Enekwechi's win earned five points for the Power 4 conferences.
Jessica Harter competed in the pole vault at the same time as Enekwechi. She opened with the bar at 3.91m (12-10.00), and cleared on her second attempt. Her next bar was 4.06m (13-3.75), which she cleared on her first attempt. That clearance was a personal record and moved her into fourth place on Purdue's all-time list. That's where Harter would finish, which was good for second place and three points for the Power 4. Harter's mark is currently tied for 22nd in the country.
The women's distance medley relay team wrapped the day up for Purdue. The team of Kiara McIntosh, Taylor Dunlap, Vanessa McLeod and Katie Hoevet, which holds the school record from last season, went on to win with a new facility record and time of 11:16.44, which is the third-fastest time in program history. McIntosh opened the race with a 3:27.77 in the 1,200m leg, which had Purdue in second. Dunlap ran a split of 56.15 in the 400m, which put the Boilermakers in third. McLeod's 800m leg time of 2:11.02 kept Purdue in the lead group, before Hoevet ran 1,600m time of 4:41.50 to bring home the win by nearly three seconds. The time is currently the best in the nation.
Elsewhere on the track during the day, Savannah Carson qualified for the 60m dash finals, after winning her prelim with a time of 7.41 seconds. Devynne Charlton finished with the 10th fastest 60m time, after finishing second in her heat with a time of 7.43 seconds. Her time did not advance to the eight-person final. Charlton did advance to the finals in the 60m hurdles. She won the first heat with a time of 8.29 seconds. That time held on to be the second fastest time in prelims, just 0.001 of a second behind the leader. Freshman Malcolm Dotson made the men's 60m dash finals. He won the fifth heat with a time of 6.87 seconds.
In the women's weight throw, the Boilermakers advanced three to the finals. Freshman Sarah Loesch led the group with a best of 18.40m (60-4.50), which was within eight centimeters of her personal best. Sophomore Elizabeth Iversen had a huge PR, throwing 18.38m (60-3.75) to finish sixth. Iversen's previous PR was 17.74m (58-2.50) from last season. Alisha Bahler finished eighth with a best of 17.58m (57-8.25).
