MADISON, Wis. -- For the second year in a row, a McKenna Meuer goal was the difference in a 1-0 win for Wisconsin vs. Purdue women's soccer.
Meuer scored her fifth goal of the season in the 32nd minute Sunday. She headed home a redirected free kick from the left flank served into the 18-yard box by Kinley McNicoll. Meuer scored both of her two goals last season at the Boilermaker Soccer Complex.
Purdue goalkeeper Erika Yohn made a season-high six saves for the third time this season to help keep her team in the game. She made four of her six saves in the first half when Wisconsin (5-4-3, 2-1-1 Big Ten) was credited with an 8-1 edge in the shot count. The Boilermakers (6-5, 1-3 Big Ten) recorded all five of their shots on goal in the second half when they had a 10-8 advantage in shots and 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Purdue was shut out for the third time in the last five games.
"We played really well in the second half," head coach Drew Roff said. "We're still trying to get over the hump and I want to focus on the positives. Zero (standings) points on the road trip stings, but I'm confident we aren't far off."
The Boilermakers had five shots in the final 12 minutes as they chased an equalizer in the one-goal game. Hannah Leinert, Erika Arkans and Andrea Petrina all recorded a shot on goal during that stretch. Maddy Williams led Purdue with four shots, all in the second half.
A yellow card was issued to Wisconsin's Steph Fabry in the 89th minute, giving the Boilers a set piece opportunity. Petrina put the free kick on goal but Caitlyn Clem made the save, her fifth and final of the day.
Melisa Casella, Kim Love and Dannah Williams went the distance among the Purdue field players. Arkans logged 35 minutes to lead the reserves. Gabby LeMere was the first Boilermaker off the bench.
Purdue returns to action Friday when it hosts Nebraska at 7 p.m.
