WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Matthew McClintock was named Capital One Division I Men's Track and Field/Cross Country third team Academic All-America on Thursday. McClintock is one of 45 track and field and cross country athletes across the three teams honored with the Academic All-America distinction.

To be considered for Capital One's Academic All-America, a student-athlete must be a key contributor and maintain a grade point average, or GPA, of at least 3.30 on a 4.00 scale, be in at least his or her second year at the current institution and be officially nominated by an athletics communications director.

Recently, McClintock was named Academic All-District 5 which qualified him for All-America honors. The movement and sports science major carries a 3.67 cumulative GPA and is one of eight Big Ten men to be recognized as an Academic All-American.

McClintock wrapped up an incredible season on the track at the NCAA Championships two weeks ago. The junior finished First Team All-America in the 10,000-meter run during the outdoor season, after finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships. He was the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds champion in and finished runner-up at the Big Ten Championships in the event. McClintock won the 5,000m Big Ten title in May, becoming the first man in school history to do so.

During indoor season, McClintock finished third in the 5,000m at the Big Ten Championships. Indoors, he broke the school records in the 3k and 5k, while outdoors he set the Purdue standard in the 5k and 10k.

McClintock also broke records during the cross country season. He finished 19th at the NCAA Championships to earn First Team All-America honors. The honors were the second of his cross country career, making him the first Purdue man to win a pair of All-America honors during cross country season since Robert Rodibaugh in 1949 and 1950.

Earlier this month, McClintock was named Purdue's male recipient of the 2015 Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. He was chosen as an individual who has distinguished himself through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The individuals for the award must be fair and respectful to their opponent and, in addition, be enthusiastic about the game, enjoy playing it and, win or lose, do their absolute best at all times. The recipients also shall be active on their campus communities. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

McClintock also was named Academic All-Big Ten for cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field.
