WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue baseball National Letter of Intent signees Nick Dalesandro and Kyle Ostrowski were selected in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Dalesandro, a catcher, outfielder and right-handed pitcher from Plainfield, Illinois, and Joliet Catholic High School, was drafted in the 33rd round by the Detroit Tigers. Ostrowski, a left-handed pitcher from Tinley Park, Illinois, and Lincoln-Way North High School, was selected in the 34th round by the Seattle Mariners.

Dalesandro and Ostrowski now have the option of attending Purdue, or signing with the MLB organization that drafted them and heading directly to the minor leagues. Players that enroll at a four-year university after graduating high school are not eligible to be drafted again for three years or after their junior season.

Kevin Kiermaier was the last Purdue NLI signee to be selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. He signed with the Boilers in the fall of 2009 as an NJCAA All-American at Parkland College in Champaign, but opted to go pro after the Tampa Bay Rays selected him in the 31st round of the 2010 MLB Draft. Players at junior colleges are eligible to be drafted after their freshman or sophomore campaigns. Kiermaier made his big league debut in the 2013 American League Wild Card tiebreaker game between Tampa and Texas, and is now the Rays' starting center fielder.

A year earlier, Brad Schreiber (42nd round, Brewers) and Cameron Perkins (43rd round, Mariners) were selected in the 2009 MLB Draft after standout seasons as high school seniors, but opted to enroll at Purdue that fall. Both players were drafted again after the Boilers' 2012 Big Ten championship season and are currently playing pro ball at the minor league level. Monday, Schreiber was named an All-Star in the Florida State League. Perkins was an All-Star in the FSL in 2013 and spent much of last season at the Triple-A level.

Barrett Serrato, a starting outfielder on the 2012 team, was also drafted after high school (48th round in 2008 by the Marlins) and again following the conference championship season. In all three cases, they were selected earlier in the draft the second time around.

Dalesandro and Ostrowski were among a group of five NLI signees in November, a group that would make its team debut during the 2016 college baseball season. The other three NLI signees included Jacson McGowan (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg), Duncan McKinnon (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) and Joe Uvelli (Norridge, Ill./Ridgewood Community).

Dalesandro helped lead Joliet Catholic to the 2013 IHSA Class 3A state title as a sophomore, striking out nine in his complete-game shutout on the mound in the title game. Joliet Catholic was 28-7-1 this season after he earned Prep Baseball Report and IHSBCA all-state honors as a junior. Dalesandro struck out 14 in a shutout win against Tinley Park in a regional semifinal the final weekend of May.

Ostrowski was an All-Southwest Suburban Conference performer while leading Lincoln-Way North to its sixth straight regional title this year. He struck out 15 in a May 19 no-hitter against rival Lincoln-Way Central.

Purdue's Sean McHugh and Jordan Minch were selected in the 2014 MLB Draft. The Boilermakers had a program-record seven players drafted in 2012.
