WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -Â One of Purdue's most decorated athletes for the 2014-15 academic year has picked up an award for his efforts in the classroom. Junior Matthew McClintock, a cross country All-American and track Big Ten champion, has earned Academic All-District 5 honors, qualifying him to potentially be an Academic All-American.
McClintock has had an incredible year athletically and academically. The movement and sports sciences major boasts a 3.68 grade-point average (GPA), while balancing cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. The junior finished third at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships in November, before taking 19th to earn All-America honors. The All-America nod was the second of his career, making him the first Purdue men's cross country runner to earn All-America honors multiple times.
On the track, McClintock continued his success. He finished third in the 5,000-meter run at the Big Ten Indoor Championships to earn six points for the men's side. Outdoors, he broke the 5,000- and 10,000-meter school records to put his name at the top of the four longest race events indoors and out, including the indoor 3,000- and 5,000-meters. At the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, McClintock became the first man in Purdue history to win a 5k Big Ten championship, and the first to win a race of similar distance since 1961, when George Harvey won the two-mile event. McClintock also was runner-up in the 10k.
The junior continues his season next weekend at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Jacksonville, Florida. McClintock had qualifying marks in both events, but will only compete in the 10k.
McClintock advances on the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot. The first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be announced for Division I on June 25.
