EAST LANSING, Mich. -Â Tyler Askew gave the Purdue men their third podium finish of the Big Ten Championships with one day left in the meet. The Boilermakers sit in fifth on the men's side and 11th on the women's side heading into Sunday's finals.
Askew competed in the long jump on Saturday and continued the strong meet on the men's side. The senior leapt 7.51 meters (24-7.75) on his second attempt, which would hold on to be his best of the competition. That mark was the second best in the event, earning Askew the silver medal and eight points for the Purdue men. He joins Matthew McClintock (silver) and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (gold) as Purdue men whom have podiumed at the championships through the first two days. Anaquan Peterson also scored in the long jump. He finished seventh with a mark of 7.29m (23-11.00).
On the women's side, Purdue advanced several individuals through to Sunday finals. Devynne Charlton advanced to the finals in the 100m dash and 100m hurdles. In the dash, she finished second in the first heat with the second-fastest overall time, crossing the finish line in 11.51 seconds. Her time earned an automatic qualifier to Sunday. In the hurdles, the sophomore cruised to a first heat win with a time of 13.21 seconds. Her time was second-fastest overall, as she earned an automatic bid. Charlton had a personal record in the 200m dash with a wind-legal time of 23.76 seconds to finish third in her heat. Though she did not advance to finals, she finished 10th overall. Charlton's 200m dash time ranks fifth in program history.
Carmiesha Cox had a strong day on the track as well. The sophomore Bahamian ran a Purdue PR in the 100m dash with a wind-legal time of 11.63 seconds. That time ranks third in program history and earned her an at-large berth in Sunday's finals, as her time was the eighth-fastest overall. Cox also earned an at-large spot in the 200m dash finals. She ran a time of 23.38 seconds to take second in her heat. Her time was the fifth-fastest overall and earned her the first at-large spot in Sunday's finals. Cox will also likely run in the 4x400m relay for the Boilermakers.
Brionna Thomas made it back for Sunday's final in the 200m dash. The freshman ran a time of 23.52 seconds, the second-fastest in program history behind Cox's PR. Thomas finished second in the fourth heat and had the seventh-fastest overall time to earn a berth in the finals. Thomas also ran in the 400m dash, where she ran a time of 54.60 seconds to take second in her heat. Her time was 10th fastest overall and just missed qualifying.
Savannah Carson scored for the women on Saturday in the long jump. She finished fifth with a Purdue PR of 6.10m (20-00.25). The mark does not officially count in the record books, though, because it was aided by a tailwind of +2.8 meters per second. Carson also ran in the 100m dash where she missed finals by 0.01 of a second. The sophomore ran a time of 11.64 seconds to finish third in her heat and ninth overall. Hope Schmelzle also put points on the board for the Boilermakers on Saturday. The sophomore finished fifth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:24.81
Vanessa McLeod won the first heat of the 800m run to automatically qualify for finals. She ran a time of 2:10.91, which was the 17th-fastest overall. Katie Hoevet made it back in the 1,500m run with a PR and the school's third-fastest time in history. Hoevet was in the fast heat and finished third in the heat, and overall, with a time of 4:20.99, which is the fastest time by a Boilermaker since 1988. Symone Black breezed through her prelim in the 400m hurdles, winning her heat by more than three seconds. The freshman ran a time of 58.54 seconds in the first heat, which held on to be the top overall time in prelims by more than half a second.
On the men's side, Obokhare Ikpefan had the fifth-fastest time in the 400m hurdles and was second-fastest in his heat, earning him an automatic bid. The sophomore ran a time of 51.70 seconds. Enekwechi and Luke Lewis will compete Sunday in the shot put, while Purdue will also look to pick up points in the relays and pole vault.
