EAST LANSING, Mich. -Â Chukwuebuka Enekwechi defended his title as Big Ten hammer throw champion on Wednesday. Matthew McClintock added a silver medal in the 10,000-meter to help the Purdue men end the first day of the Big Ten Championships in second place.
Enekwechi opened the hammer throw with a mark right on his personal record. From there, he took off. The junior's second attempt shattered the school record and meet record with a throw of 72.77 meters (238-09). That mark held on to win, though he also had multiple more throws over 70 meters. Enekwechi won Purdue's sixth men's hammer throw title, which began in 1999, in program history, including his title a year ago. His mark ranks third in the country this season.
Enekwechi is the first Boilermaker in history to win multiple hammer throw titles. He is just the fourth individual in Big Ten history to win two hammer throw titles, and just the third to do so in back-to-back years. He is the first individual in Big Ten history to record a mark over 70 meters at the conference championships. The win is his second of any kind, indoors or out, at the Big Ten championships.
McClintock took runner-up in the 10k. The junior stayed in the top five for the duration of the race and took the lead with about five laps left. He held that lead until a little over 100m left, when Malachy Scrobilgen turned on a late burst and used it across the finish line. McClintock finished with a time of 29:20.14, just 0.59 of a second behind the Wisconsin sophomore.
The Purdue men wrapped up the first day with 18 points, good for second place. The Boilermakers are three points behind the leaders, Wisconsin.
On the women's side, Jacqueline Williams got the Boilermakers on the board. The senior pole vaulter tied for seventh. After clearing 3.92m (12-10.25) on her second attempt, Williams made it over 4.02m (13-2.25) on her first attempt. She just missed 4.07m (13-4.25) on her final attempt, but finished in a tie for seventh, earning the Boilermakers 1.5 points. Jessica Harter finished ninth after clearing the same height.
In the hammer throw, Micaela Hazelwood had a huge PR. She threw 56.26m (184-7) to finish 12th overall, coming out of the first flight. She had the top mark in the first flight by nearly 10 feet.
The women are in eighth place after the first day with 1.5 points. Michigan State leads with 26.
The Boilermakers have a full slate of action on Saturday. Heat sheets can be found at the top of the page.
