WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -Â Chukwuebuka Enekwechi was named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday. The award is his second of the outdoor season for the junior.
Enekwechi broke the school and facility records in the hammer throw on Friday. He recorded a winning mark of 69.76m (228-10). His throw was the best in the Big Ten over the weekend and seventh in the country for the season. Saturday, Enekwechi won the shot put with the Big Ten's best mark of the weekend, 19.30m (63-3.75). That mark was better than all but two Big Ten throwers' bests on the season. Enekwechi also competed in the discus for just the second time in his career. He took third with a personal best of 49.44m (162-2).
The award is Enekwechi's first since April 15. He has now been named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week twice for his career during the outdoor season and nine times overall.
Enekwechi and the Boilermakers will be back in action next weekend with the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Michigan.
