WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermakers finished off a series sweep of Wisconsin with a 6-0 win on Sunday afternoon, to wrap up a perfect 3-0 home and stadium opening weekend.
The Purdue pitchers - junior Lilly Fecho and freshman Gina Snyder - combined for nine strikeouts - while allowing just three hits. Snyder threw the final four innings in the contest to pick up her fifth win of the season, while Fecho tossed three hitless innings in the start. Mariah Watts (5-4) struck out eight in the loss for Wisconsin.
The Boilermakers scored their six runs on eight hits, including two-hit efforts by juniors Mary Gooding and Paris Andrew and sophomore Kristen Hoppman.
A pair of doubles gave Purdue a 4-0 lead after the first inning. A single by senior Alyssa Koorsen and walks to senior Ashley Burkhardt and redshirt junior Katie Harrison filled the bases with one out for freshman Kaylah Hampton, who plated two with a double to left center. Andrew brought in two more with a double to right center. Andrew went to third on a wild pitch, but the Boilermakers couldn't bring her home.
The Boilermakers combined two more doubles for scores in the third. Harrison walked to start the stanza and went to third on a double by Andrew. Pinch runner Stephanie Ramsey and Andrew both scored as Hoppman sent a double down the left field line the following play.
A leadoff walk gave Wisconsin its first base runner in the fourth, but Snyder rebounded with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
The Badgers got two infield hits in the sixth, but the Boilermaker defense held to keep the shutout in tact.
A bunt single in the seventh gave Wisconsin a runner, but fielder's choice, a strikeout and a fly ball to left capped the game.
The Boilermakers (22-9, 3-0 Big Ten) return to action at 5 p.m. Friday when they welcome Rutgers to West Lafayette for the teams' first Big Ten meeting. The game will air live on the Big Ten Network.
