Men's Tennis Heads West for Three-Day Tournament

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team will be facing possibly some of the greatest competition of the season when they head to California to compete in the BNP Paribas Collegiate Challenge presented by Oracle Friday - Sunday. The Boilermakers (4-7, 0-2 B1G) open the three-day tournament Friday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indiana Wells, California. First serves are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET.

The eight-team tournament includes six nationally ranked teams, including three among the top five in No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 3 Baylor and No. 4 Southern California. No. 20 Tulsa, No. 28 California and No. 29 Columbia round out the ranked squads and BYU is the eighth team in the bracket.

In addition to highly ranked teams, the tournament features numerous nationally ranked singles players and duos. The eight teams combine for 20 ranked singles players and have 13 doubles teams listed.

The Boilermakers will begin the tournament with their first match against reigning NCAA runner-up and top-ranked Oklahoma. The Sooners (14-1) boast a strong resume with a record of 14-1 with five wins against teams ranked in the top 10. Six singles players are ranked, led by No. 7 Axel Alvarez Llamas.

Dependent upon the Oklahoma outcome, Purdue's second opponent will be either Columbia or California. With a win, the Boilermakers will play Saturday at 2 p.m., and with a loss, they will play at 11:30 a.m.

Scoring format for the tournament will be as follows:

• No-ad scoring in singles and doubles

• Each contest begins with three doubles matches, each match one set to six, with a tiebreak at 6-all

• The team that wins two of three matches in doubles earns one team point. If the point is clinched, the remaining doubles match will be stopped.

• After a five-minute intermission, six singles matches will be played. Each match will be played two of three sets, with tiebreaks at 6-all.

• Each singles matches equals one team point

• Singles matches will be stopped when one team scores four team points

• No warm-up with opponents in doubles or singles
