WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Carmiesha Cox missed the Lambert Fieldhouse facility record by 0.01 of a second in 200m dash on Saturday at the Fred Wilt Invitational. Cox's time of 24.05 seconds converts to 23.69 seconds because of Purdue's short, flat track. That converted time is better than the school record of 23.87 seconds, which Cox ran last week.
Cox was in the first heat of the 200-meter dash and won the section by 1.17 seconds. Her time of 24.05 seconds is the fastest ever by a Boilermaker at Lambert Fieldhouse, though is 0.01 of a second behind Michigan State's Susan Francis who ran a 24.04-second time in 1994. Cox's converted time ranks 27th in the country and second in the Big Ten. Symone Black and Savannah Roberson finished third and fourth, respectively, in the event. Black ran a time of 24.77 seconds, while Roberson clocked in a 24.78. Both times convert close to 24.40.
The women's team found success in the 60m dash as well. The Boilermakers had the top four qualifiers through prelims, with Savannah Carson, Cox, Twyla Winfrey and Devynne Charlton, respectively. Carson went on to win in finals with a time of 7.41 seconds, 0.01 off her PR. Cox was second with a personal-best time of 7.42 seconds. That time bumps her fourth-place time in school history up 0.07 of a second, though remains fourth. She did move up the Big Ten lists, though, as she is now tied for the fourth-fastest dash time in the conference, including behind No. 2 Charlton and No. 3 Carson. Winfrey finished third in the finals tying her all-time PR with a season-best of 7.50 seconds. She moves into ninth on the Big Ten season list, giving the Boilermakers four of the top nine times.
Taylor Dunlap ran an indoor PR in the 400m dash en route to the top overall spot on Saturday. She posted a mark of 55.74 seconds, which converts to 55.01, the Big Ten's 13th-fastest time on the season. Aarin Jones and Symone Black took second and third with times of 56.26 and 56.39, respectively.
Kendall Hacker won the women's mile with a PR in the event. She broke the five-minute barrier for the first time in her carrier, crossing the line in 4:59.54. Cierra Brown and Shantyra Delaney both made finals in the 60-meter hurdles. Brown missed her PR by 0.01 of a second in the finals, taking third overall with a time of 8.58 seconds. That time ranks 15th in the conference. Delaney finished with a time of 8.65 seconds. She was also 0.01 of a second off her PR. Brown also won the triple jump with a mark of 12.61m (41-4.50).
The Boilermakers had a pair of PRs in the women's pole vault as well. Jessica Harter and Jacqueline Williams each cleared 4.04m (13-3.00) to take second and third, respectively. Their marks tie for the fourth-best clearances in school history and eighth in the conference this season.
On the men's side, Tyler Askew had a solid afternoon. The senior advanced to the finals in the 60m dash where he finished fourth with a time of 6.96 seconds. He also won the men's long jump with a distance of 7.45m (24-5.50) which ranks third in the conference. Matthew Garrison PRed and finished fourth with a mark of 7.09m (23-3.25).
The Boilermakers took the top four spots in the 400m dash with Obokhare Ikpefan taking the top spot. He ran a time of 48.27 seconds, which converts to 47.52, the Big Ten's ninth-fastest mark of the season. Chris Arvia was second in 48.56 seconds, which converts to 47.80 seconds, the 14th-fastest time in the Big Ten this season. Nicholas Parks and Kendal Frederick rounded out the top four.
Justin Veteto and Shane Mikesky qualified for the finals in the 60m hurdles. Veteto ran a PR of 8.22 seconds in the prelims and followed it up with a fourth place finish time of 8.23 seconds in the finals. Mikesky took sixth in 8.33 seconds. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi finished second in the shot put the day after breaking the weight throw school and facility record. He threw a distance of 18.72m (61-5.00).
Moussa Conde used a big day in the pole vault to win the heptathlon. He cleared 5.04m (16-6.50) to earn 923 points, and ended up with 5,062. Tim Deal won five of the seven overall events and took second behind Conde with a total of 4,987. His total ranks sixth in school history.
At the Iowa State meet, the Boilermakers PRed in six of the eight events. Katie Hoevet was just off her PR in the mile with a time of 4:44.87. That time ranks seventh in the conference this season. Hope Schmelzle also PRed, as she ran a 4:52.82 to take 15th. Jake Waterman PRed in the 3k with a time of 8:08.40 to take 14th overall. Though it was a PR by just 0.49 seconds, it moved him from sixth to fourth on the all-time Purdue list. He also ranks eighth in the Big Ten this season.
The Boilermakers have one final tune-up before the conference championships. They will travel to Notre Dame for the third time in five weekends for the Alex Wilson Invitational. That meet is scheduled for next Saturday at 11 a.m. ET.
