Senior Whitney Bays had 22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds on Sunday, marking her 13th double-double of the season.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's basketball team suffered a 79-71 overtime loss at the hands of visiting Ohio State on Sunday in Mackey Arena. The Boilermakers led by as many as 12 in the second half and had a couple looks to win it at the end of regulation, but fell short in the extra period, falling to 10-10 overall and 3-6 in Big Ten Conference Play.

Senior Whitney Bays paced the Boilermakers with 22 points, 19 rebounds and four steals, but was outdone by Ohio State freshman Kelsey Mitchell, who set a Mackey Arena record with 37 points, including 31 in the second half and overtime, as Ohio State improved to 13-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

The first half was slow going for both sides as the lead changed hands 10 times and was tied five times, while the two squads shot a combined 31.7 percent from the field (20-63). Ohio State had the largest margins of the half as Mitchell opened the half with a triple to take a 3-0 lead and closed with another to give the Buckeyes a 25-22 edge at the break, marking her only six points of the half. The teams combined for a 5:18 stretch during the opening 20 minutes without any scoring, sitting at a 14-13 Ohio State advantage from 13:22 until a three-pointer by Purdue junior Hayden Hamby at the 8:04 mark.

Play stayed tight over the first five minutes of the second half as Ohio State took a five-point lead on back-to-back buckets from Mitchell, but Purdue countered with a three-pointer by sophomore Ashley Morrissette and an old-fashioned three-point play from Bays to pull back to even, 34-34. An offensive putback from freshman Andreona Keys at the 13:54 mark sparked a 9-0 Boilermaker run in which Bays did the bulk of the damage.

The Boilermaker senior grabbed back-to-back defensive boards and flipped them ahead to Keys and senior teammate Liza Clemons, and then proceeded to drop in a bucket of her own with contact for a three-point play. Mitchell slowed the run with the Buckeyes' first basket in over two miunutes, but junior April Wilson capped the run with a triple from the right wing, pushing the lead to 12, 53-41, with 11:39 to play.

Ohio State began whittling the Boilermakers' lead down the stretch as Mitchell began attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line. She scored 11 straight points for Ohio State, cutting the lead to five, 55-50, and then after buckets from a pair of teammates, hit five-of-six free throws to tie the game, 60-60 with 4:06 to play. A steal and score by Mitchell and a pair of free throws from junior Ameryst Alston but Ohio State up by four, 64-60.

Free throws plagued the Boilermakers as Bays missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Clemons got just one-of-two at the line, but Morrissette came through with her second triple of the game to knot the score at 64-64 with 47 seconds left in regulation. The Boilermakers got a stop defensively, calling timeout with 31 second to play. Wilson let time work down and made a nice backdoor pass to Morrissette, but her shot was blocked by Ohio State. Bays grabbed the board and went back up, unsuccessfully, and Wilson then came up with the ensuing loose ball and had one last look before time expired. Her jumper went just long off the back iron and the Boilermakers headed to overtime for the second time this week.

It was all Ohio State in the extra period as the Boilermakers just couldn't get going again and the Buckeyes were flawless at the free throw line down the stretch.

Purdue returns to action on Thursday, hosting Rutgers University for the first time as a Big Ten Conference opponent. Tip is set for 7 p.m. (ET) in Mackey Arena and the game will air live on the Big Ten Network.
