WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Daniela Vidal upset DePaul's No. 93 Patricia Lancranjan to highlight the Purdue women's tennis team's outing during the second day of action at the Purdue Invite on the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center Saturday. The three-day event concludes on Sunday with one round of doubles and one round of singles starting at 9 a.m. ET.
Vidal waged a war against Lancranjan and prevailed in two tightly contested sets, 7-5, 7-6 (3). The senior from Maracaibo, Venezuela, is ranked 118th in the first edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings. The upset marks her first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 69 Clementina Riobueno of Miami (Fla.) on Oct. 11, 2013.
Senior counterpart Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum was the only other Boilermaker to come away with a singles victory, taking a pair of sets from Ana Vladutu of DePaul, both in the breaker, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2).
In doubles, Purdue went 5-1 after a 4-2 performance on the first day. Two sets of Old Gold & Black doubles teams went 2-0 on the day.
Krisztina Kapitany and Deborah Suarez used a 6-3 decision to get past Denver's Pioneers Sonja Radosevic and Graica Mboko. They picked up their second win of the day by beating Ana Vladutu and Patricia Lancranjan of DePaul, 6-4.
The other Purdue duo of Lynda Xepoleas and Andjela Djokovic dominated Pioneers Evy Van Genechten and Charlotte Derbyshire, 6-1. The senior sophomore duo then dealt DePaul's Zaina Sufi and Yuliya Shupenia a 6-4 setback.
Vidal and Benard-Feigenbaum went 1-1 coming out beating Maureen Slattery and Julia O'Loughlin from Denver (6-4), but fell short in the breaker to the 52nd-ranked Blue Demon team of Jasmin Kling and Patricia Fargas, 7-6 (5).
The Purdue Invite is using the new ITA Shorted Format for scoring. It was voted upon by the ITA Division I operating committee in December 2014. The new format features no-ad scoring in singles and doubles, and doubles are played to six with a tiebreak at 6-all.
